What Your Naturopathic Doctor Does Behind the Scenes

During Your Visit

When you meet with your naturopathic doctor, you see the time spent together during your appointment. What you may not see is the work that happens before and after your visit.

As a licensed naturopathic doctor who has been practicing for 13 years, one of the principles that guides my work is looking beyond symptoms to ask: Why is this happening?

A health condition may have one cause or several contributing causes. I often describe my role as being a health detective. I look at your history, symptoms, labs, previous treatments, medications, nutrition, lifestyle, and other factors. Then I connect the dots.

Treating the Person, Not Just the Condition

I could see five patients with the same condition, and all five may have very different treatment plans. Each person has a unique history, genetics, needs, and goals.

That's why I don't typically rely on one-size-fits-all protocols. I use an integrative approach that combines conventional medicine with evidence-based natural medicine to treat the person, not simply the condition.

When I started Bios Comprehensive Medicine in 2019, I chose the name intentionally. I wanted to practice medicine comprehensively and look at the whole picture.

The Work You Don't See

Before your visit, I review your history, previous treatments, and prior and current lab results, looking for patterns and trends. During your appointment, I gather more of your story, including your current symptoms, what you've tried, what has or hasn't helped, how you're progressing, and your goals.

After your visit, I will develop a personalized treatment plan based on what we've learned. That behind the scenes work is an important part of your care.

I want the same things for my patients that I want when I see my own naturopathic doctor: someone who listens, takes the time to look at my case, puts the puzzle pieces together, and answers my questions.

So, the next time we meet, remember that your appointment is only part of the time I spend on your care. That's what comprehensive medicine means to me: looking at the whole picture, connecting the dots, and treating the person, not just the diagnosis.
